About Mimi's Indoor Plants

I've been caring for plants for over 15 years. What began as curiosity — why does this one thrive here and struggle there? — became a discipline, and eventually a career.

I'm Jacq Bell, founder of Mimi's Indoor Plants, named for my late grandmother. Mimi taught me that caring for something living is an act of attention, not a checklist. That belief is still the foundation of everything I do.

The science behind the care

Plants don't respond to good intentions. They respond to light quality, humidity gradients, root zone oxygen, and soil chemistry. My background in Environmental Science means I diagnose problems the way a scientist would — by understanding the system, not guessing at symptoms.

When I tell you your fiddle leaf fig is dropping leaves, I'll tell you why: that it's a phototropic response to insufficient light intensity, not a watering issue. You'll leave every visit knowing more than you did before. That's intentional. An informed plant owner is a successful one.

Where plants led me

Plants taught me systems thinking — how light, water, soil, and air are interdependent, and how small changes cascade. That way of seeing pulled me from houseplants toward the larger questions: how ecosystems are protected, who decides, and what regulations actually do.

I'm currently pursuing a JD in environmental and regulatory law. It's the same curiosity that made me want to know why a plant was struggling, applied at a much larger scale. The through-line is the same: understand the system, then care for it well.

The Mimi's difference

Anyone can water a plant. What makes Mimi's different is that I show up as a person, not a service. I learn your space, your light, your schedule, and your habits. I remember which plant your mother gave you and which one you've nearly killed three times.
